Simple Ways to Save Money on Electricity and Gas Bills

As a renter, it can often feel like you have little control over your energy savings. Although your options may be more limited than if you owned the home, there are still several things you can do to ensure you are conserving energy!

Switch Out Your Light Bulbs

LED bulbs use 75% less energy and last 25 times longer than incandescent bulbs. Although these bulbs are a bit of an investment, they will last much longer and save you on energy bills in the coming months. CFLs are another great option. Remember to turn your lights out when you leave a room!

Hang Blackout Curtains

The thick fabric will help insulate the windows, keeping the house cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. Being mindful to close the curtains during the day will make a significant difference!

Adjust Your Thermostat

Perhaps the simplest tip to implement, just taking a bit of forethought before you leave for the day! Turning your thermostat up or down (depending on the season) is a great way to save money while the home is empty. You can also invest in a programmable thermostat (such as Nest) and take your temperature control to the next level.

Locate Air Leaks

It is very common for windows, doors and trim to develop gaps or leaks over time, creating excess work for your heater and air conditioner. Check these areas for small openings and use caulk or weatherstripping to seal off any small leaks. Please notify your landlords, of course, if the gaps are significant and need repaired!

Only Wash Full Loads

This applies to both dishwashers and washing machines – conserving the amount of loads you wash with hot water will save you money in the long run. Instead of running frequent small loads, use the same amount of hot water to clean larger loads of laundry and dishes! Be careful not to over dry your clothes, and always remember to clean your lint trap – these are both important energy savers.
