What To Do When Your Power Goes Out
Oklahoma’s weather can be unpredictable in more than one season, and it can be helpful to have a checklist of what to do should you lose power at your rental. Read on for a few starting points!
Check The Circuit Breakers
Always check the circuit breakers first. All breakers should be on the “on” side, but if a breaker tripped, it would have moved to the “off” side. Make sure all breakers are in the same position. If all the breakers are in the “on” position, turn off the main breaker and then switch it back “on.”
Call The Electric Company
Call your local electric company if you have an outage. Chances are, they already know, but either way, they can give you an update. Please report any downed lines or damage!
Preserve Food
Try not to open the refrigerator or freezer to preserve the cold air in there, but if you must, remove all perishable food items. The air in the fridge will remain cold for a limited time after the power outage. The more you expose it to room temperature, the faster it will warm up and the faster your food will spoil. If it’s cold enough, you might put a few items outdoor!
Unplug Major Appliances
Do not unplug the fridge. However, you can unplug the microwave, surge protectors providing power to multiple electronics and so on. When the power comes back on, a power surge could damage some of your major appliances if they are plugged in.
Drip Your Faucets
If it’s going to drop below freezing, be sure to drip your faucets
Get Out!
Just because your power is out, that doesn’t mean that’s the case all around town. Go out to dinner or a movie! As long as the fireplace and stove are not on, your home will be in one piece when you return.
